Effective boundary conditions for two-phase flow in porous media Keywords: porous media, homogenization, degenerate partial differential equations, interface condition, two-phase flow, fuel cells, unsaturated media Abstract (from the SNSF Project Database) This project is rooted in the field of partial differential equations and their mathematical analysis. The motivation is to bring together two fields of research: A) Research on unsaturated and two-phase flow in porous media, done by mathematicians, and B) Research on PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cells, undertaken by physicists and engineers. Field A is mainly concerned with groundwater flow and oil recovery, therefore electrochemical effects are rarely included. Furthermore, due to their slim design, interface conditions between porous material are of utmost importance in fuel cells, and their study is incomplete in field A. We think that the analytical and numerical methods of field A can provide powerful tools when applied in field B. Our aims in this project are a regularization procedure for two-phase flow equations with outflow boundary conditions, and a study of effective interface conditions for materials with varying characteristics. |
