Basic Information

Computer

jerusalem / jericho / unimatrixzero / tatooine / dantooine are terminal servers, please don't start CPU intensive programs on these machines, for calculation purposes there is a server load list with available servers.

Software

A list with installed software is available here.

Backup

The home area of each user is stored every weekday evening by the HRZ. If you want to restore a file please write an email to the MRB. To limit the backup size every user has a disk quota of 2 GByte. Every user has a second file area accessable via the nobackup link in the user's home directory. This nobackup area has no quota but there's no backup.

Network

Our network is protected by a firewall, so only SSH connections are accepted. FTP and telnet access from outside is not possible, if you want to establish a ftp connection from inside, you have to use passive ftp.

Database

You can change your personal settings like research interests and research tasks for the FB web page, mail forward and password via the following URL:

To access use your common account and password. The FB web pages will be updated every night.

This interface is only available within the math network, accesses from outside are blocked by the firewall.

To use the interface from outside you have to create an ssh tunnel:

Windows:
  • Download and install ftp://ftp.cert.dfn.de/pub/tools/net/ssh/SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe
  • Start the SSH terminal program
  • Select Add Profile
  • Select a name for the profile, e.g. "Datenbank FB Mathe"
  • Select Edit Profile
  • Type in jerusalem.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de as Hostname
  • Type in your account name
  • Select Ok
  • Select Edit Profile
  • Select tab Tunneling
  • Select Add
  • Type in the Display name, e.g. Datenbank FB Mathe
  • Type in 11271 as Listen Port:
  • Type in admin.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de as Destination host:
  • Type in 11271 as Destination Port:
  • Select Ok
  • Log in to jerusalem
  • The database interface is usable now via the local URL localhost:11271

Use of USB sticks with SunRays

To use USB memory sticks with SunRays you have to perform the following steps:

  • plug in the USB stick
  • the USB stick is now available under /tmp/SUNWut/mnt/USERNAME/DEVICENAME
  • work with the USB stick via the usual UNIX commands (cp,ls, .....)
  • IMPORTANT:before plug off you HAVE to use the command uteject disk1 to unmount the USB stick

  • Affirm the next question whether inbox should be used as INBOX on smtp.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de.
  • You also need to provide a valid sender address; pine would simply use your account name and the name of the host you're currently logged in to. That's not sufficient. So, go to default-composer-hdrs and type 'c' or press enter to change its value
  • Enter: From:,To:,CC:,Bcc:,Attachmnt:,Subject:
  • Finally, go to customized-hdrs, type 'c' or press enter and enter From: your name <your first name.your last name@mathematik.uni-dortmund.de>
  • Exit setup (e.g. by typing 'e') and affirm to commit the changes
  • Open your inbox by entering menu folder list and selecting INBOX. You will be prompted for a password - which is just your usual one.
  • P.S.: There is no possibility to store that password within pine.

Mail@Home

Sending mail from a computer from outside the FB network, e.g. if you dial in via an internet provider from home, via our mail server smtp.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de is impossible, because the mail server rejects mail from outside to prevent spamming. To send e-mail from home there are three possibilities:

Use VPN
If you have set up your computer to use VPN and have connected it to HRZ-VPN, you can use our mail server smtp.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de straightaway
Use an HRZ UniMail account
Configure UniMail's smtp server (unimail.uni-dortmund.de) as outgoing server and enable TLS encryption. This is only an option, however, if you have an additional HRZ UniMail account. The server will ask for your UniMail accountname and password whenever you send email.
Use your internet service provider's mail server
This option may cause additional efforts, too (additional accounts, fees etc. depending from the ISP). See the help pages of your internet service provider or contact his help desk for additional information on how to set up your computer to send mail through his mail servers.
Use SSH tunnelling to temporarily establish an (encrypted) connection from your computer to FB's network you will send mail through.
  • Download and install ftp://ftp.cert.dfn.de/pub/tools/net/ssh/SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe
  • Start the SSH terminal program
  • Select Add Profile
  • Select a name for the profile, e.g. "Mathematik Jerusalem"
  • Select Edit Profile
  • Type in jerusalem.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de as Hostname
  • Type in your account name
  • Select Ok
  • Select Edit Profile
  • Select tab Tunneling
  • Select Add
  • Type in the Display name, e.g. Mathematik Mail senden
  • Type in 25 as Listen Port:
  • Type in smtp.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de as Destination host:
  • Type in 25 as Destination Port:
  • Select Ok
  • Log in to jerusalem
  • Change outgoing server in your Mail program from smtp.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de to localhost
  • Keep in mind: Before you can send e-mails you always have to login to jerusalem using this profile!
